Working with knit has turned out to be a fun challenge. I was drawn to the idea of making lamps from lightweight sweaters because of the interplay between color and texture. The structure of the material is revealed when the light is turned on, and the thicker fabric makes a color statement whether turned on or off. The biggest challenge is trying to wrangle the threads of the knit into even rows. Knit naturally slumps, drapes and stretches as it moves. That’s what makes it so comfortable to wear. But as soon as you cut it, it begins to unravel before your eyes. After a bit of trial and error, I managed to coax the fabric into shape. I think the results are lovely.
